The extraordinary four volume series of recordings of the temple rituals and sacred ceremonies of the monks of Bhutan. Recorded in the great monasteries by John Levy, four volumes that may represent the most important recorded documents of Tibetan ceremonial music ever undertaken. Secondly, this album, called "volume 4", is EXACTLY the same as another CD with a different title "Tibetan and Bhutanese Instrumental and Folk Music, volume 2": Tibetan & Bhutanese Instrumental & Folk. Very confusing as one is named vol 2 (on the spine of the CD) and the other vol 4. Both comprise an identical set of recordings made by John Levy in 1971. The one on this page is a few dollars cheaper as of this writing. Both have 99% the same liner notes, albeit in different formats (this one a foldout, the other one a booklet).

Re-release on CD of recordings originally made by John Levy in 1971. Volume 3 features the subjugation of an evil spirit, the incredible sound of monks in procession playing portable monastic instruments, a dramnyen (lute) solo by one of the Chief Abbots bodyguards, mystical poems by Milarepa sung by wandering ascetics, as well as other vocal and instrumental musical expressions of the fascinating people. from the back inlay.

The third album in the epic Lyrichord Tibetan barbecue delivers some majestic examples of music typical of this genre as well as tantalizing tidbits that are much less familiar to these collections, of which the Lyrichord anthology represents one of the major sets. There were four albums in this series originally stamped out in the '70s, while in 1994 a CD box set was created combining everything, including the original informative liner notes, complete with photography and notated musical examples. This is one of the most essential sections of this field recording extravaganza, starting.

The clang of Tibetan cymbals has also been known to clear wimpy listeners out of houses or record stores, and even cause a divorce or two along the way. This is just one level of the genius that can be appreciated on these recordings, because of course these albums can be dealt with on a much higher philosophical and intellectual level. And, as the years go on, recordings made in the early '70s in Bhutan acquire more and more historical value.
