But in 1997, it felt like a step forward. Urban Hymns was the surprise third act for a band that seemed doomed after its second. Their most successful single up to that point-1995’s string-swept ballad History -doubled as an epitaph, with the notoriously embattled relationship between frontman Richard Ashcroft and guitarist Nick McCabe triggering the band’s demise just before it snuck into the UK Top 30.

Add me to the list of buyers who received a mediocre pressing. Throughout the album, there are loud pops due to little fragments on the vinyl that feel as though they're tiny bits of vinyl/plastic on the surface. It's a shame as the 180g wax is great and could have turned out far, far better than it did. The sound on mine is pretty flat as well, without any of that analog warmth that is usually present. This is one of the best albums in the last few decades and is certainly one of my favorites. For Capitol to let this go without addressing the problem is simply lazy & greedy at best. This is unfortunately the the price we're paying due to the huge vinyl resurgence as albums like these are being mass produced which in turn creates weak quality control. Nevertheless, there is no excuse for a pressing like this and things won't change until we the buyers bring these issues to the forefront and pledge to stop buying albums that suffer from lazy/compromised production. I will be returning this to the record shop I purchased it from as they always accept returns for issues such as these. Thank God we still have Mom 'n Pop record shops!

This pressing sounds like absolute garbage. I can't believe how thin it sounds. Very disappointing, since it's one of my faves from the 90s.

Sounds great. Unfortunately, there are some defective pressings out there. Mine skips several times during "One Day". Searched to see if this might be a common problem & found one comment in a forum : Bob_in_OKC 01-23-2012, 10:33 PM My wife bought The Verve - Urban Hymns new on Amazon and it had a serious defect that was unplayable. She returned it for an exchange and the replacement had the same defect in the same place on the record. Comment found somewhere in the middle of the page here: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/archive/index.php/t-419073.html

Just an update: I just bought this LP and I also had the same issue during the last 2 or so minutes of 'One Day'. The stylus was almost slipping over the groove. I took my discwasher kit and ran some fluid on the brush over the area for a few spins and replayed the entire track and all of the skipping is now gone. For all those with this issue, try that method. I'm still not sure what caused the skipping though but I figured maybe it was high static or something.
Mave
Yep mine does too. Amazon sent me a new copy and it skips in the same place during One Day.
Spilberg
My copy skips there as well. I checked the needle, and the surface of the Lp to see if there was something like dust or a scratch but can't see anything wrong but there's clearly something defective. I'm tempted to write the label and tell them about it.

Overall this re-release is pretty well done, though it does sound quite "digital" to my ears. Does anyone know the source material for the pressing?
Ffleg
.Richard. - thank you for this! That is good to know. Definitely sounds exactly as you have described.
Ranenast
I believe Capitol only has a digital cutting head, not sure they have ability to do full AAA anyway...
Dianazius
Did anyone else have run out grooves on the first and second side that are shitty? They cause my needle to jump onto the label. It's completely fucked my stylus now!
SkroN
Mine too - didn't quite jump to label but bloody noisey
Jia
Yes, it's US.
Gavigamand
Can someone confirm that this is Virgin Canada, not US? I have this issue from 2008 and is is Capitol USA, as is the 2008 reissue available on Amazon. Thanks.
