Typical Basic Channel sound also represents their unique use of vocoder in melodical chord sounds generated from beats, noise or whatsever with feedbacked delays, that are presented in this record as well. The result in Dub I is the most hypnotising techno sound you can find in any techno record. Minimalism, functionalism, white noise in the background. Every sound has its own purpose and place. There's no other recording in this genre I hold to a higher regard than Quadrant Dub and I've been an avid collector of this genre for two decades. This production crossed boundaries few have ever equaled. Epic in scale and duration, this is the unfathomable record of the 90's for me, the anomaly. Undefinable and untouched, the holy grail of the Basic Channel catalogue. Reply Notify me 9 Helpful.

You may notice that this list holds many compilations standing in as albums. In a genre so deeply associated with the 12″ single format, many early dub techno artists became known to the wider world via compilation CDs. This is where the hermetic genre feel becomes an advantage: these compilations often evoke the feel and structure of planned album releases. For me, this is the most remarkable dub techno record ever made. 15 minutes long ”Dub I” describes the whole dub techno genre in a nutshell. Other side is a deep house version of the same track, which is also excellent work, but it is much more dance floor oriented than ”Dub I”. This record is described as a ”remix” from ”I’m your brother”, but like other ”remixes” by Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus (like Paperclip People remakes), you cannot find the original track from this record at all, except some really silent distorted string noise in the background from the original that most of the people can’t even hear. Everything else is completely rewritten from start to end, and in between. Any needless sounds just do not exist. This is a masterpiece.

It's 22 years ago and still doesn't sound dated at all, masterpiece!

Is there a way to tell if what I have is the original press or the remastered one? I still have a sticker on it: 101250-01 BC 06/00036 MLI/4.

Has the vinyl record "built in" cracks and noise? It sounds like that... It looks perfect.
Ffrlel
My version has surface noise and crackles throughout the first third ( circled NSG and BC 06 on the runout). I have another version here with D & M and BC 06 on the runout that sounds much better overall and no surface noise or crackles.

Yes. Listen to the recordings on Youtube and you'll hear that it's supposed to be a cavernous sound with a hissy surface sound - it's all part of the "atmosphere" this record is all about.
Domarivip
One of my two copies has BC 06 on both sides, rather than BC Ø6 for the B-side, anyone else?
Karg
One of those records that straight removes you from time and space. This is the top of the notch.

Over 20 years have passed and there still hasn't been another release to equal the depth of this and I reckon only a slight few I could ever compare to this coveted production.

One of the most important records in my collection, this record defines the term hypnotic. There aren't many suitable words to describe a masterpiece like this, you'll have to hear it to believe. Subtle change is everything and a moment lost would alter the listening experience, treat yourself to this record if you haven't already, it could change your life.

This is the best introduction to the Basic Channel sound - it doesn't explore sidetracks like abstract experimentation (Radiance, Octagon) or hard techno (Phylyps Track, Enforcement), but instead concentrates on the vast and expansive sort of dubbed-out house that Basic Channel effectively invented. The sounds are like distant strings scattered throughout the sky, seen through the distortion of heat haze. The low-down, stomach-tickling deepness of the bass underpins the endless, multi-layered atmosphere, and makes for an immensely captivating track. It's like hearing a wonderful deep house record from the opposite side of the Grand Canyon, the sounds shimmering and refracting on their way across. This is one of those records that makes you annoyed that more music can't be pressed onto a piece of vinyl - I want this to go on for four hours. Get two copies, though, and make a whole minidisc seguing between the two dubs, and go on a long scenic drive...
